Eligibility

GPA of 2.75 overall, with a 3.0 average in college Spanish courses above the intermediate level. Students should have completed 2 courses beyond the intermediate level in order to be eligible for the program.

University Affiliation—Universidad Complutense de Madrid

The Marquette Study Center makes its home within the Universidad Complutense de Madrid — one of Spain’s largest and most prestigious universities. Universidad Complutense is located in the northwest part of the city and has an enrollment of about 60,000 students. As a student, you’ll be able to integrate yourself into the campus life through daily contact with Spanish faculty, students and staff. You’ll also have complete usage of Complutense’s facilities—libraries, computers, sports fields and cafeterias—as well as cultural and academic events sponsored by the university and its affiliates.

Madrid

Spain’s cultural center, Madrid epitomizes what it means to be Spanish. You will experience the city in its natural glory through exploring places like the Parque del Retiro, a favorite spot for Study Center students. It is Madrid where Ernest Hemingway scoured taverns with fellow Lost Generation expatriates, and where Spanish Modernism found its inspiration and poetic voice. And Madrid’s museums are considered some of the world’s best. Shop in the markets and small stores, sample Spanish cuisine at cafés, tapas bars and restaurants, live the culture through the many festivals, theatre, music, dance and other entertainment offered. And you can do all of this easily and affordably with Madrid’s excellent mass transit system.

Nestled inside this cultural capital is a city with a surprising small-town feel. The neighborhoods of Madrid where you’ll live when you participate in the Marquette Study Center are warm and friendly places, each with its own unique charm.

Students are required to enroll in two courses (6 credits). Courses are offered on the Universidad Complutense campus with other U.S. students. Courses are taught by Complutense professors, as well as the faculty director.
